Trending searches on Wechat: Ukraine; Two Sessions; Epidemic
Trending searches on Wechat on Tuesday were mainly related to Ukraine, the Two Sessions, and the COVID-19 epidemic. I believe it accurately reflects the Chinese people's current concerns.
With instant messaging as its primary function, Wechat, the Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s app, has evolved into a platform where individuals can search for news and information, make transactions, create self-made videos, subscribe to publications, and so on.
Wechat's monthly active user (MAU) has topped 1.2 billion, according to Tencent's Q3 report of 2021. According to China Youth Daily, a corporate executive claimed in January that the MAU for Wechat's search feature has surpassed 700 million.

1.China urges U.S. to release details of bio-labs in Ukraine -- Xinhua
中方呼吁美澄清在乌实验室信息
Chinese foreign ministry on Tuesday called on the United States to release all-around details of its biological laboratories in Ukraine, and urged relevant parties to ensure their safety.
Recent media reports said those biological laboratories store large quantities of dangerous viruses, and Russia has found in the course of military operations that the United States uses those facilities for biological military programs.
Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a daily press briefing that for the health and safety of people in Ukraine, surrounding areas and the whole world, all parties concerned should ensure the safety of those laboratories.
"In particular, the United States, as the party that knows the laboratories best, should release relevant specific information as soon as possible, including what viruses are stored and the research that has been carried out," Zhao said.
The Security Service of Ukraine, the country's main security agency, and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine have said the claim of U.S. labs is false, according to USA Today. Ginger River hasn’t seen further response from the U.S. side.
2.Member of CPPCC suggests registering blood type of newborns and parents on birth medical certificates
委员建议出生证明登记亲子血型
Gao Yanming, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), chairman of HOSCO Group, an ocean shipping enterprise, suggested in his proposal to the ongoing Two Sessions that registering the blood type of newborns and parents on birth medical certificates, according to The Paper.
Gao said the current "birth medical certificate" mainly registers the birth status of the newborn and the identity information of the parents. However, the certificate does not register the "blood type" of the newborn and the parents.
Knowing the blood type of the parents and the newborn, to a certain extent, can help preventing the happening of the tragedy of people taking the wrong child home and finding out that he or she is not one's biological child after years of raising the child, said Gao.
The proposal reminds Ginger River of a "hospital mistakenly giving parents the wrong baby" case, which triggered public attention in April 2020, when Beijing News reported that a mother surnamed Xu from East China's Jiangxi province found that Yao, whom she had been raising for 28 years as her son, was not her biological child when she wanted to donate her liver to save the cancer-stricken young man.

A court in Central China's Henan province ordered a hospital to pay more than 760,000 yuan ($116,384) in compensation to a family of three after it determined the hospital harmed a couple by mistakenly giving them the wrong baby 28 years ago and caused their biological child to become seriously ill due to its previously medical irregularities.

China's judicial authorities strengthen protection of women, children -- Xinhua
China stands firmly opposed to domestic violence, strictly punishes abusers in accordance with laws, read a work report of the Supreme People's Court (SPC).
It also highlighted the severe punishment imposed on crimes related to sexual harassment against, abducting, and trafficking in women or children, as well as buying those women and children who are abducted and trafficked, showcasing the reinforced judicial protection, read the report.
Women and children protection was also underscored in the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) work report. The SPP pledged to take a tough stance in prosecuting suspects involved in human abducting and trafficking, according to the report.
China's Ministry of Public Security has launched a 10-month special operation to crack down on the abduction and trafficking of women and children starting from March 1 amid efforts to protect these groups more.
It is obviously needless to mention the impact of the chained women case, which caused public outcry over the woman's inhuman treatment in February. In addition, the SPP report was submitted to the ongoing session of the NPC for deliberation on March 8, coinciding with International Women's Day.

Beijing reports 7 new local cases, upholds ‘dynamic zero-COVID’ policy to curb the virus’ spread - Global Times
Beijing reported seven local COVID-19 cases from Monday to 4 pm Tuesday, and will uphold its dynamic zero-case policy to curb the virus' spread with the fastest, most precise prevention and control measures, as imported cases from abroad and outside Beijing remain the biggest risk of the epidemic in the capital, the local authorities said on Tuesday.
Among the local confirmed cases, there was one family cluster. Two children from one family tested positive for COVID-19 in the preliminary screening in Chaoyang district of Beijing on Monday. Their residential community was put under closed-loop management starting from Tuesday, according to local authorities.
Another two family members were also confirmed as COVID-19 patients — one is the children's mother and the other is the children's grandmother. The grandmother returned to Beijing from outside the city on February 28, and the original place she lived was classified as medium-risk for COVID-19, according to the authorities.
On the same day, Shanghai has clarified two rumors of the city's epidemic situation circling on social media as fake news. One is 上海学生要停课四周 "Shanghai students to be suspended from school for 4 weeks," and the other one is 明天起全市恢复2020初战时状态 “The city will return to its early 2020 epidemic prevention mode from tomorrow.”

6.Gong Hanlin responds to his criticism of "some certain" soccer team
巩汉林回应批评某足球队
"Some stars earn hundreds of millions of dollars but still evade taxes.” “Some certain soccer team, with [players] receiving pay of tens of millions yuan, failed to score goals on the pitch. It was completely a disgrace to the Chinese people!" said Gong Hanlin, an experienced Chinese actor and member of the National Committee of the CPPCC, as he made some remarks against some high-income earners recently, which aroused public attention, according to v.ifeng.com (video link).
Gong responded in an interview on Monday saying that "what people may have seen about what I said was only parts of a video clip," and that his intention was to encourage more publicity for model workers, suggesting that the criteria for recognizing model workers be reformulated so that everyone can see the value of labor.
For years, China has been trying to improve the strength of the national soccer team. However, China's slim hopes of qualifying for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar was crushed after it lost 3-1 to Vietnam in the final round of Asian Zone qualifiers on February 1, which was also Chinese New Year Day.
7.Zhang Wenhong releases an article analyzing the current epidemic situation
张文宏发千字长文解析疫情
Zhang Wenhong, head of the Center for Infectious Diseases with the Shanghai-based Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, released an article on Weibo Monday, analyzing China's current epidemic situation as clusters of local cases have emerged in many parts of the country, ushering in a severe test of a wave of imported cases coupled with local cases.
"We may always face imported cases or local cases, but our goal is to always control the epidemic to keep it at a very low level that does not cause a large-scale rebound of cases or overstretched of medical resources, so that we can be in a position to ensure that the people live a normal life through precise prevention and control," said Zhang.
Zhang also stressed the importance of vaccine, saying that for the future of anti-epidemic control policy, the vaccine strategy will be a top priority. He said that as long as the current momentum [of efforts on vaccine development] is maintained, with a very good medical triage system, it is expected that the world, including China's Hong Kong, will emerge from COVID-19 in the future.

9."Little golden shield" is not a product quality certification mark
“小金盾”不是产品质量认证标志
In December 2021, China's National Medical Products Administration issued the “小金盾” "little golden shield" logo for children's cosmetics, with the aim of improving the recognition of children's cosmetics and protecting consumers' right to know.
On March 7, the administration issued an article on its official website stating that some cosmetic manufacturers and operators have intentionally confused the meaning of the "little golden shield" logo by linking it to promotional terms such as national approval and quality certification when marketing their products.
In this regard, the administration reminded consumers that the "little golden shield" is not a product quality certification mark. Cosmetic packaging labeled "little golden shield" only means that the product is classified into children's cosmetics, and does not mean that the product has been approved by the regulatory authorities or the quality and safety is secured.

两会会场上3只“老虎”被“点名”
Three “tigers,” - cadres understood as in the ranking of above the vice provincial/ministerial level, were mentioned as examples of the country's anti-corruption achievements at the second plenary meeting of the fifth session of the 13th NPC Tuesday.
Both the work report of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) and the work report of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) mentioned Wang Fuyu, former Party secretary and chairperson of the Guizhou provincial committee of the CPPCC on Tuesday.
Ginger River did a full translation of Wang's case with exclusive details and jaw-dropping footage, which was included in a five-episode TV series called 零容忍 Zero Tolerance broadcasted on CCTV1 at prime time in January. Each episode featured around three anti-corruption cases.
Wang Like, a former senior Party official in east China's Jiangsu Province was also mentioned in the work report of the SPP, and Qin Guangrong, the former Party chief of southwest China's Yunnan Province, was mentioned in the work report of the SPC .

Chinese courts concluded 23,000 cases related to corruption, bribery and dereliction of duty in 2021, involving 27,000 people, according to the report of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) submitted to the ongoing session of the national legislature for deliberation.
Efforts were made to bring back illicit money and goods related to duty crimes and over 59 billion yuan (about 9.3 billion U.S. dollars) were recovered, read the SPC report.
In addition, my friend Wang Zichen, "Pekingnologist," translated two other cases of the Zero Tolerance TV series related to two "tigers": Sun Lijun, once China's youngest vice minister in public security, and Hu Huaibang, former Party secretary and Chairman of China Development Bank.
