Put on top of that the threat of war, it almost feels too much, let alone considering how much they have already experienced, coming through the Sino-Japanese war. The elder whose quote you ended with just made me tear up because I'd like to imagine that we are so much closer to that world that he envisioned, and I certainly hope he saw that and took comfort in it before he passed.
